Installing a low flow shower head is a fantastic way to save water and at the same time, save money. These type of shower fixtures are cost effective as nicely in that they do not cost a lot to purchase. As with most products, there is a range and a higher end, higher quality product will cost you more. A fine quality low flow shower head can be purchased for under $200. While this might seem expensive as an upfront cost, but the money you will save from decreased water use will briefly add up to save you more than the $200 (or less) that you spent to purchase it.
How do Low Flow Sower Heads work? They simply provide a decreased flow of water. More specifically, they deliver much less gallons per minute (gpm) of water than conventional ones. The flow from the shower head is also affected by water pressure which is measured in pounds per square inch (psi). So, the greater the pressure pushing the water through pipes and shower heads, the greater the volume of water forced out. If you use a low flow shower head, it will loose the pressure and volume thus saving water and money.
The standard flow for conventional shower heads was famously about 5 to 8 gallons per minute (gpm) at 80 psi. But similar to toilets, whose standards have been changed to conserve water, the standards for shower heads has also changed. The current standard is 2.5 gpm at 80 psi. There are actually some low flow shower heads that deliver as low as 1.6 gpm.
Keep in mind that the quality of low flow shower heads and the quality of your relaxing shower time will not be compromised by installing one water saving fixtures. There are really some great products on the market that offer the same additional features as conventional shower heads such as different jet levels and available in several finishes.
