Rebuilding Greensburg in Green

The City of Greensburg, Kansas, was flattened by tornadoes one year ago. Now they are rebuilding in green! Two thirds of all residents were homeless, and most businesses were destroyed. This is an immense opportunity for this town to build almost the intire city based on green building principles.

The US DOE is partnered with the City of Greensburg to support their green plans. The town publisehd the GreensburgGreenTown Blog where you can follow the progress of the green re-building.

From the mayor, to businesses and individual home owners, they are committed to making Greensburg the greenest town in the US .

Wind power generators and geothermal heat pumps are being installed. Homes are being built with green building materials.

The cultural arts center utilizes recycled wood and has a passive solar energy design. The John Deere dealership will use windpower, waste oil and cornoil for their floor heating system.

The downtown area is planned to have low impact development, such as pedestrian friendly, wide sidewalks and energy saving LED street lamps.

This town is a great example for making the best out of a bad situation. Go for it Greensburg!
