Welcome To Green And Sustainable Homes
This site is dedicated to all of you who want to live in green homes. It is a source of information on how to remodel and existing home, build a green addition or build a new green home.
What Makes A Home A Green Home
Green and sustainable homes minimize the impact on the environment and they provide us with a healthy indoor environment in which we can live and raise our families.
Green homes meet many of the following criteria:
- Orientation and design are optimized for maximum passive and active solar energy and the use of natural light
- Location of the green home has minimal impact on soil, plants and water absorption
- Building materials are green, sustainable and recyclable
- Overall energy consumption for power, heating and cooling is minimal to zero
- Alternative energies are used, such as solar, geothermal, wind power
- Landscaping is based on indigenous plants, minimal water use and the creation of natural wildlife habitats
- Construction waste is recycled
- Soil disturbance during construction is minimized
- Existing plants, trees, shrubs and bushes are maintained and left undisturbed to the largest extent possible
The above list might be a bit overwhelming. And the amount of information available can be equally overwhelming.
Start slowly, educate yourself, ask questions and take it one step at a time.
