Sustainable green home renovations, especially of old homes, can range from replacing the flooring, installing replacement windows, upgrading the siding and adding insulation, to totally gutting the home.
I highly recommend that you start with an energy audit. This will tell you where your home looses the most energy and has the highest infiltration.

A Smart Green Home In Downtown Chicago

I came across this video showing a prototype smart green home.
This home is built in downtown Chicago to demonstrate a green home in and urban setting. It features recycled or re-used building materials, a green roof, rainwater collection, fully automated lights and HVAC system, photovoltaic panels, and more.
