Solar Energy In Massachusetts

April 29, 2008 by Christiane

This past week three major solar energy announcement happened in Massachusetts:

MIT is building a new center, dedicated to developing sustainable energy systems. National Grid will contribute $1 million, with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative contributing $ 5 Million as initial funding.

This new center is fully in line with Gov. Deval Patrick’s commitment to making Massachusetts a more green state. He also announced last week that solar panel manufacturer Evergreen Solar, with headquarters in Marlboro, will be doubling the size of their plant.

And finally, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino stepped up the city’s commitment to green by announcing the Solar Boston Program. This is a 2-year $ 550,000 initiative to increase the installed solar capacity in Boston from currently half a megawattts 35 megawatts by 2015.

And how is the above related to you, the home owner?

The development of sustainable energy systems, including solar energy, will result in better products being available for you to incorporate into your home. With National Grid being involved, it really shows that utilities are interested in supporting alternative energies. So check your local utility for incentives and rebates.

Solar panel manufacturers are increasing their production, because they know the market exists. The result will be again, better and more products.

With Mayors and Governors (Gov. Patrick and Mayor Menino are not the only ones) committing their states and cities to go green, solar and other alternative energies are becoming more and more mainstream.

What is happening in your state, city, town?
