Is Self Sufficient Living Your Dream – Here’s How You Can Do It

For many people, self sufficient living seems like the impossible dream. They would love to live more simply, work in their own garden, make the things they need for day to day living, and see their lives more in harmony with nature. Yet they feel trapped in a fast paced lifestyle and burdened under the pressures of paying the bills to sustain a way of life they aren’t really that excited about. Is there a way to break free? Is it really possible to get back to basics and enjoy the good life? The answer is yes, and that’s what this article is all about.

In the summer of 2000 we moved to a small off grid cabin in the wilderness. It was there that we began to learn about gardening and a more sustainable way of life. Since then, we’ve been learning, little by little – often by trial and error. There have been some tough experiences, but we’re glad now that we never turned back.

While there are key steps to take and mistakes to avoid in achieving the goal of a self sufficient way of life, with a little knowledge, anybody can enjoy the benefits of sustainable living. Our own experience certainly proved that, but we’ve also seen it time and time again in helping others to make the transition to self sufficient living as well. It might be helpful, however, to begin by reviewing the most common pitfalls that seem to keep many people from ever taking the first step.

The biggest mistake people often make is in trying to master self sufficient living all at once. This tends to lead to discouragement or becoming overwhelmed and ultimately giving up. The secret of most who have successfully made the transition from a dependent way of life, to sustainability is by taking small steps. For example, the easiest and best place to start sustainable living is gardening. But many find the task of preparing and planting a garden daunting, or they don’t have the space to grow everything they know they would need to truly be self sufficient. It’s much better to start small. No matter what your current living situation is, anyone can start growing vegetables – even if it means growing them in pots on a high rise balcony, or planters in the window. Maybe you have some space in the back yard – the key is just plant a small amount that you can easily manage along with the rest of your busy schedule. That might not be very much, but the satisfaction of growing your own food – even if it’s just a small amount at first, will help to energize you in taking other steps to become less dependent on the system.

Planning and persistence will ultimately lead you to your goal, one step at a time. This is true for self sufficient living, just like it is in every other pursuit in life. Education is key, however, and the sooner you find a good source of reliable information, the sooner you’ll be on your way. There are various considerations, including growing and storing food, alternative energy, as well as other aspects of sustainable living. Nevertheless, it all starts with knowledge which will ultimately enable you to reap the rewards of self sufficient living. There’s no better time to start than right now.
