I came across an interview in the Iowa Independent about green homes with David Johnston of “What’s Working” of Boulder, CO. The interview is about Johnston’s perspective on green construction and how it is becoming mainstream. Johnston is one of the leading experts in the US on green construction.
I agree with his assessment that in the not too distant future (I hope) all construction will be green. The label “green” will become absolete, because it will be standard practice. Yeah! I can hardly wait!
He also talks about how the biggest area for green construction is the remodeling of existing homes:
Adding insulation, replacing windows, upgrading HVAC systems and appliances with high-efficiency models. Every step will help, especially if green and sustainable building materials are used.
Installing alternative and renewable energy systems for heating, cooling and electric power generation on existing homes will have a huge impact on reducing carbon emissions.
In addition, actually as the first step, sealing all leaks around electrical outlets, doors and windows is very important and often easily accomplished. The cost of sealants and tapes, or even hiring a skilled worker to fill in gaps, will quickly pay for itself in reduced energy costs.
Where and how can you get started towards making your home green?
